The season is over for the Texas State men’s basketball team, which lost a heartbreaker in the first round of the Southland Conference tournament last night, a 79-78 overtime defeat to Southeastern Louisiana. The Bobcats stormed out of the gate, holding a 17-point halftime lead, but the Lions responded with 48 2nd half points to force overtime. In the extra session, Southeastern’s Patrick Sullivan hit 1 of 2 free throws with 2 seconds left, and Texas State’s Cameron Johnson missed an open 2-point shot at the buzzer that would have given the Bobcats their first tournament victory since 2003. Johnson led the Bobcats with 23 points in the losing effort as Texas State closes its season with a record of 15-16. The Final Four of the Southland Conference tournament pits Southeastern against top seeded Sam Houston State, and Stephen F. Austin against A&M-Corpus Christi, who took out UT-San Antonio yesterday 78-66.

Up in Austin tonight, the Texas State baseball team has a golden opportunity but a big task ahead of them; the Bobcats face off against the 3rd ranked Texas Longhorns at Disch-Falk Field. The Bobcats and Longhorns are no strangers to one another, tonight will be the 40th meeting between the two; Texas has won 30 in the series; and it tonight won’t be the only time they play one another, Texas State will visit the Longhorns two more times this season. The Bobcats are 5-5 on the season after taking two of three from Texas A&M Corpus Christi in a conference opening 3-game series this past weekend; first pitch for tonight’s game in Austin is at 6:05.
The high soccer post-season in vastly approaching, and tonight will provide area teams with an opportunity to jockey for positioning. Canyon’s soccer teams play Wimberley; the girls are at home to face the Texans, the boys are on the road; both teams start at 6:45. The Canyon girls are 10-0-2 in district, and sit just 1 point behind Dripping Springs for the district 51-4A lead with three games left to play. The Cougar boys are in a tight race in their district; Canyon’s in 2nd place with only a 3 point lead over 5th place Seguin. Canyon Lake soccer faces Lehman this evening, the girls, who are playoff bound are on the road, the Hawk boys, out of post-season contention play Lehman at home. Smithson Valley soccer plays out the same way, with the Ranger girls having already clinched a playoff berth and the boys out of the 26-5A race; tonight the Ranger teams face Churchill, the girls are in San Antonio and the boys play at Ranger Stadium. Both New Braunfels soccer teams have the night off.
26-5A play continues today for both the New Braunfels and Smithson Valley baseball teams; both the Unicorns and Rangers are 1-1 in district play. New Braunfels plays district leading Churchill in a late afternoon tilt in San Antonio, 4:30 at the Blossom Athletic Center baseball field. Smithson Valley will try to keep Madison winless in district play when they host the Mavericks at 7:00 at Ranger Field. Canyon Lake is also at home tonight, for a 7:00 start against Hays. New Braunfels, Smithson Valley and Canyon are currently ranked in the San Antonio Express News’ top 10 entering the week of play, Smithson Valley at #6 with an overall record of 8-3, Canyon at #9 with a record of 6-3 at the start of the week and New Braunfels rounds out the Top 10 at the #10 spot; the Unicorns are 6-5-1.
The #1 ranked area softball team is the Canyon Cougarettes; the defending state champs are 12-2 through the first three weeks of the season and tonight get their first district match-up, against Seguin at 7:00 from the Canyon Softball field. Smithson Valley softball is 10-1-2 on the season, 2-1 in district and ranked 3rd in the Express News top 10; tonight the Rangers square off against Madison in a 26-5A clash at 7:00 from Ranger Field. Canyon Lake hosts Pearsall at 6 this evening, and New Braunfels is off tonight after playing Roosevelt last night, a final score is unavailable at this time.
The Texas State men’s basketball team is playoff bound, and might be one of the more dangerous teams entering the Southland Conference tournament, winning three straight games to close out the regular season highlighted by a victory over conference leader Sam Houston State this past Saturday in San Marcos 101-97 in overtime. Texas State finishes the regular season with a record of 15-15, 9-7 in conference which is good for 5th place. The Bobcats 1st round match-up is against the 4th seed Southeastern Louisiana, which tips off at 8:30 Wednesday night in Katy. The winner of the Southland Conference tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament later this month.

All of the area’s baseball teams were in tournament play; New Braunfels is coming off a 2-1-1 showing at the Uvalde Tournament, ending the tourney with the ever-so-rare 5-5 tie against Laredo Alexander. Over the weekend the Unicorns posted wins over Laredo United South 15-8 and Uvalde 6-5; New Braunfels is now 6-5-1 on the season. After a hot start to the Comal ISD tournament the Canyon Cougars cooled off a bit, losing their final two games of the tourney after winning the first two. The Cougars lost to John Paul II on Friday 9-3 and then to Kileen Ellison 10-3 on Saturday, dropping Canyon to 6-3 on the season. Tonight the Cougars are at home for a 7:00 start against Lockhart. Smithson Valley also played out at the Comal ISD tournament and won their final two games on Friday and Saturday, notching a 10-5 win over Antonian and a 14-3 victory over Cuero. Rangers Matt Bineck and Ryan Gotardy where both named all Tournament Team.
Smithson Valley’s softball counterparts bounced back nicely from its 1st district loss suffered early last week by shutting out MacArthur 11-0 in a rout this past Friday in San Antonio. New Braunfels softball also won its 26-5A game in a shutout this past Friday, 9-0 over Lee.
In boys high school soccer, New Braunfels played Reagan to a 1-1 tie and Canyon blanked Canyon Lake 5-nil in a district match-up from Cougar Stadium. The Canyon girls blanked Canyon Lake as well, defeating the Hawks 3-nil to improve to 10-1-1 in district play. The New Braunfels girls lost to Reagan by a 4-nil score; both Smithson Valley soccer teams were off this past Friday.

The New Braunfels Civic Center has been home to everything from wedding receptions, meetings for the Outer Loop Task force, to special events like the Texas Legislative Conference later this month. Tomorrow the Civic Center will house “Championship Fight Night”, an Amateur Mixed Martial Arts event hosted by the Athletic Boxing Gym of New Braunfels. As for tomorrow night’s card, the featured fight between Phillip Gonzalez of Odessa and Billy Buch (Boo) of New Braunfels will be a big reason for an expected packed house at the Civic Center as tickets are flying fast. Tournament play continues for area baseball teams today; Smithson Valley, Canyon and Canyon Lake are in day two of the Comal ISD tournament and New Braunfels is at Uvalde for its 2nd day of tournament play. Canyon won both of its games at the CISD tournament yesterday, defeating St. Michael’s 16-4 and Cuero 10-7. The Cougars had 24 hits in the two games, 7 of them home runs and 2 of those hit by sophomore Tanner Hill who now has 4 for the season. The winning pitchers were Jacob Gonzales and Derek Kanas, both now 2-0 on the season; the Cougars are 6-1 as a team. Smithson Valley’s six game winning streak is over after splitting its two games yesterday; the Rangers opened the CISD tourney with a 12-2 win over Del Valle. Smithson Valley had 4 two-run homers in the game, two hit by Matt Binick; the other two by Josh Velazquez and Connor Ramirez. The Rangers then lost their 2nd game of the day 9-4 to Kileen Ellison, dropping Smithson Valley to 6-3. New Braunfels also split its two games yesterday, losing the opener of the Uvalde tournament 7-5 to Medina Valley, but then defeated Laredo United South 15-8; the Unicorns are now 5-5 on the season.
