(New Braunfels, TX)  --  The Comal County Metro Narcotics Task Force, which includes officers from the Comal County Sheriff’s Office and New Braunfels Police, took down an alleged meth dealer this week. On Wednesday the Task Force received information that a delivery of drugs was headed to New Braunfels and officers began surveillance on the alleged dealer, following him to an address in the 600 block of Bus. 35.

Mill Street Road Closures in Downtown New Braunfels Next Week - July 30, 2010

(New Braunfels, TX)  --  Get ready for some road closures on Mill Street. The city road department is teaming up with TXDOT to work on Mill Street at Seguin Street, near the Tax Office, starting next week. They’ll be replacing the pavement along Mill Street, and pulling up the old signal loops that used to send signals to the traffic light at that intersection, before it was upgraded to the new camera operated system.

NBU Votes Today on their 2011 Budget - July 29, 2010

(New Braunfels, TX)  --  The New Braunfels Utilities Board will vote on their next fiscal year budget and their 5-year capital improvement plan when they meet today at noon. The meeting will begin with a report from CEO Paula DiFonzo, followed by a financial report and the consent agenda, before the board considers approval of their budget for fiscal year 2011. That 102-million dollar operating budget is actually 16-million dollars less than the operating budget from last year, which reflects a 17-million dollar difference in the projected power purchase cost over last year.

Important Local Government Meetings Set for Today - July 29, 2010

Comal County Commissioners meet this morning at 8:15, and will likely hire two companies to provide expert testimony in their ongoing legal dispute with engineering firm CH2MHill. Commissioners will also recognize longtime county sheriff’s office employee Edward Tijerina for his 22 years of service to the county. Again, that meeting is this morning at 8:15 in the Commissioner’s Courtroom on the Main Plaza in downtown New Braunfels.

(New Braunfels, TX)  --  We are now less than a month away from the start of the next school year, with classes in both the Comal ISD and the New Braunfels ISD starting on August 23rd, and local teachers are due back for in-service days starting August 16th. Half a Million Dollars in Spending Up for Approval at Tomorrow's New Braunfels 4B Board Meeting - July 28, 2010

(New Braunfels, TX)  --  In a special meeting tomorrow night, the New Braunfels 4B Board could end up recommending more than half a million dollars in spending to New Braunfels City Council, mostly in incentives for one business that wants to relocate to New Braunfels. First up though, following Council’s action on Monday to lease hangar space at the city airport, the 4B Board will look at approving 100-thousand dollars for improvements to that hangar, which for some time now, has been used by the New Braunfels Fire Department.

Phase 2 of Construction Begins on TXDOT's Hwy 46 Widening Project - July 28, 2010

The ribbon is cut, and Phase 1 of the Hwy 46 Pass-Thru project, from Kerlick Lane to Oak Run, is now officially complete. TXDOT officials and local community leaders gathered at the intersection of 46 and Loop 337 yesterday for that ceremony.  And while most of the community is now looking ahead to Friday’s grand opening of the new HEB at that intersection, with Phase 1 in the books, TXDOT is now looking ahead to Phase 2 of their Hwy 46 Widening project.

Local Soldiers Return Home from War This Weekend - July 27, 2010

Man Arrested in Wal-Mart Stabbing a Registered Sex Offender - July 27, 2010

(New Braunfels, TX)  --  More details have been released about the stabbing of a 64-year old New Braunfels woman, in broad daylight, as she left the local Wal-Mart Sunday morning, and the arrest of the man police say is responsible.  The woman is reportedly still in stable condition at University Hospital in San Antonio, after she was airlifted there following the 10:40am incident, where she suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest.

Ribbon Cutting on Phase 1 of Hwy 46 Project This Morning - July 27, 2010

(New Braunfels, TX)  --  Phase 1 of the Hwy 46 Widening Project, often known as the Pass-Thru project, is now complete, and a ribbon cutting ceremony is set for this morning to officially open that stretch of road to the public, just a few days ahead of the opening of the new HEB location at the intersection of Hwy 46 and Loop 337. Purse Snatching Turns Into Stabbing at the New Braunfels Wal-Mart - July 26, 2010

(New Braunfels, TX)  --  A 64-year old New Braunfels woman is recovering in the hospital, and a 46-year old New Braunfels man is in jail, charged with stabbing her outside of the local Wal-Mart. The incident happened around 10:40 yesterday morning in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart, off Walnut Avenue and I-35, when the woman was leaving the store to go to her car. She was approached by the man, who grabbed at her purse. The woman refused, and the man struck her several times in the chest, before fleeing the scene empty handed.

Narcotics Raid at Gruene-area Home Nets Two Arrests - July 26, 2010

(New Braunfels, TX)  --  Early Friday morning, two New Braunfels men were arrested and taken to the Comal County Jail after a narcotics search warrant was served on their home in the Sleepy Hollow area off Gruene Road. Officers from the Comal County Metro Narcotics Task Force, Comal County’s SWAT team, and New Braunfels Police executed a Narcotics search warrant at the home in the 16-hundred block of Gruene Road, where they arrested 38-year old Adam White and 37-year old Michael White on drug charges.

Girl Scout and Adult Volunteer Hailed as Heroes for Rescuing Boy from Spring Fed Pool in Landa Park - July 26, 2010

(New Braunfels, TX)  --  More details are emerging following the near-drowning incident at the Spring Fed Pool in Landa Park on Thursday. As we previously reported, a 5-year old boy was found floating in the Spring Fed Pool in Landa Park just before 1:30 Thursday. And it wasn’t just New Braunfels EMS crews that helped save his life. A local girl scout, an adult Girl Scout volunteer, and a nearby lifeguard also played roles in saving the boy’s life.

Prince Solms Park Master Plan Funding on Tonight's New Braunfels City Council Agenda - July 26, 2010

VFW Flag Raising Ceremony Tomorrow Morning - July 26, 2010

(New Braunfels, TX)  --  The local VFW Post is preparing to once again hoist Old Glory over their location on Peace Avenue. Their new US flag will be raised for the first time at a ceremony tomorrow, honoring the return of the red, white, and blue to the VFW Post and to honor the Korean War Veterans Armistice Day. Local Boy Scouts and ROTC members will be on hand as the VFW post raises their new flag which replaces a flag that had been flying over the post for many years, but had become too tattered, and had been taken down.

Local Woman Stabbed During Aggravated Robbery in Walmart Parking Lot - July 25, 2010

(New Braunfels, TX)  --  A 64-year old New Braunfels woman is recovering in the hospital after an armed robber tried to take her purse outside of the local Walmart, just off I-35.  New Braunfels Police and EMS crews arrived on the scene at around 10:40 this morning, moments after the robbery happened.  They found the 64-year old woman had been stabbed several times in the chest, and Airlife was called in to take the woman to University Hospital in San Antonio.  The suspect was able to escape detection, and police are now investigating and asking the p

Bandera County Sheriff to Face Abuse of Power Charges - July 30, 2010

(Bandera, TX)  --  The San Antonio Express News reports that Bandera County sheriff Weldon Tucker has waived his arraignment in District Court, essentially deciding to take his case to trial. Tucker was indicted earlier this year by the Bandera County Grand jury on charges of abuse of official capacity. At issue is the Sheriff’s use of a county-owned unmarked motor-boat that he allegedly used on a personal vacation last year.

The 3-term mayor announced in a press release this week that she will not seek a 4th term, but didn’t give any specific reason as to why she decided against running for the Mayor’s position again. She did say that the decision came after months of thought and prayer. Meanwhile, the race for Mayor of San Marcos is filling up fast. $250K Grant to Help Failing Septic Systems in Guadalupe County - July 29, 2010

(Guadalupe County, TX)  --  The Seguin Gazette reports that residents in two rural subdivisions, who have failing septic systems, could now be eligible for the 2nd in a series of federal grants. The 250-thousand dollar grant would make residents in the Redwood or Rancho Vista subdivisions eligible help with repairing or replacing septic systems that are either inadequate or were not installed properly.

Chevy Volt Price Announced - Texas Readies for Launch - July 29, 2010

(New Braunfels, TX)  --  Chevrolet has made its much anticipated announcement, telling potential buyers how much the new Chevy Volt will cost them, when it hits a limited number of dealerships across the country later this year. Chevy officials say the 2011 Chevy Volt, an electric car that goes 40 miles on an electric charge, will sell for 41-thousand dollars. But when you factor in the government’s 75-hundred dollar tax credit, the price of the car drops to $33,500. And Chevy says they will offer a lease option at $350 a month.

NWS: More Heavy Rain Possible for South-Central Texas - July 28, 2010

(New Braunfels, TX)  --  Once again, only the lucky few actually got significant rain yesterday, after scattered thunderstorm cells dotted the weather maps. Gonzales had a nice concentration of storms for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon/evening, and far western Guadalupe, and far eastern Comal had some storms pop-up just before dark, but otherwise, it was quiet in this general region yesterday. But that will likely change today, with forecasters with the National Weather Service predicting an 80% chance for more of those strong, scattered storm cells in this part of Texas.

AMBER Alert Issued for Missing Houston Girl Last Seen in Boerne - July 28, 2010

(Boerne, TX)  --  FOX News in San Antonio reports that law enforcement agencies across the state are on the lookout for a 16-year old girl missing from the Houston area that was last seen in Boerne. An AMBER Alert has been issued for 16-year old Alyssa Rehfield of Richmond Texas. Authorities believe she left home with a 36-year old man that she met on the internet, identified as David Karan. They were last seen yesterday morning in the Boerne area. If you have information on their whereabouts, call your local police department.

San Marcos May Soon Get Its Own Branch Campus of Austin Community College - July 28, 2010

(San Marcos, TX)  --  The Austin American Statesman reports that San Marcos may soon be getting its own branch campus of Austin Community College. The ACC announced yesterday a series of land purchases in Bastrop, Elgin, Kyle, Leander, and North Central Austin for future campus sites, totaling 35.4-million dollars. 2.3-million of that went to purchase 21-acres of land in San Marcos, with an adjoining 51-acres being donated by the Cottonwood Creek development firm off hwy 123 south of downtown San Marcos.

Kerrville Cross Goes Up on Hilltop Within Eyesight of I-10 - July 28, 2010

(Kerrville, TX)  --  A 77-foot tall iron cross has now been erected on a hilltop in Kerrville, near Mesa Vista Lane.  The new cross can be seen when driving down I-10 in that area, and the architect Max Greiner believes it will bring more traffic to the Kerrville area, helping out local businesses. Neighbors initially filed a lawsuit against the cross because of traffic concerns, but a settlement was reached in March between those residents and the Coming King Foundation, the church that is putting up the cross.

Fire Inside Brackenridge Hospital Parking Garage Ruled an Accident - July 28, 2010

(Austin, TX)  --  The Austin American Statesman reports that 2 vehicles were destroyed during an accidental fire inside the parking garage at Brackenridge Hospital yesterday afternoon. Austin Fire Department investigators say the fire began in the engine compartment of one of those 2 vehicles, and then spread to the other, inside the hospital’s parking garage on 15th street in downtown Austin. Firefighters had the fire under control within 20 minutes of arriving on the scene. Damages from the fire are estimated around 80-thousand dollars.

Seguin PD Looking For Tips on Armed Robber - July 27, 2010

The Seguin Gazette reports that police investigators there are seeking tips from the public as they try to identify and apprehend a man who has been robbing businesses and pedestrians at gunpoint in the last few days. The incident have all happened on Seguin’s west side, and police describe the suspect as an Hispanic male in his late 20’s or early 30’s, standing 5-foot 4 or 5-foot 5-inches tall, weighing between 160 and 170 pounds, with very little or no facial hair.

NWS: Rain Chances Increase Into the Middle of the Week - July 26, 2010

(New Braunfels, TX)  --  Forecasters with the National Weather Service say that we could see some nice rain for at least the first half of this week across the South-Central Texas region. An upper level low will draw in more moisture from the gulf coast, triggering thunderstorms activity, first in the lower-eastern part of the state, and then shifting west, setting us up for several days of rain. Most of the thunderstorms will happen during the afternoon and evening hours today through Wednesday.

The Houston Astros were off yesterday, but the day was anything but uneventful. Roy Oswalt, Houston’s Ace pitcher since 2001 is headed to Philadelphia. After weeks of trade rumors, the Astros finally dealt Oswalt yesterday, agreeing to a deal with the Phillies, who in exchange will send pitcher J.A. Happ to Houston along with a couple of minor league prospects. Oswalt won 143 games with the Astros, just 1 win shy of matching Joe Niekro for the most in franchise history.

NBA: Spurs Release Hairston, Signs With Italian League Team - July 30, 2010

In NBA News out of San Antonio, and Malik Hairston, a wing player who played sparingly in two seasons with the Spurs, is heading to the Italian League. Yesterday, Hairston signed a two-year contract with Montepaschi Siena. In two seasons with the Spurs, Hairston appeared in a total of 62 games, averaging 2.4 points in just under eight minutes a game.

UIL's Steroid Testing In Spring Finds 0 Users Amongst HS Athletes - July 30, 2010

The UIL didn’t find any positive tests in its latest round of steroids tests of high school athletes. The UIL tested over 3,300 male and female athletes statewide this past spring semester, all tests coming back negative. About 50,000 tests since February of 2008 have found only about 20 confirmed cases of steroid use. With the small amount of positive results since the UIL initiated its drug testing program, its budget for the program has shrunk from $3-million-dollars to $750-thousand.

Baseball: Myers, Berkman Lead Astros Over Cubs; Cruz' Walk-Off HR Lifts Rangers Over A's - July 28, 2010

All the Houston Astros needed to beat the Chicago Cubs last night was a dominant pitching performance from Brett Myers, and one big inning at the plate. The Astros got both in a 6-1 win at Minute Maid Park, highlighted by Myers’ complete game 4-hit effort on the mound, with a career high 12 strikeouts. Houston’s offense was in neutral for most of the game until the 7th inning when the Astros exploded for all six of their runs, four of those courtesy of Ex-Canyon Cougar Lance Berkman who hit his 5th career grand slam off of Cubs reliever Andrew Cashner.

Baseball: Astros Drop Opener To Cubs; TB's Garza Tosses No-No; Missions Fall To Midland - July 27, 2010

The Houston Astros are four games into their 9-game homestand, with a 1-3 record to show for it, after losing last night’s series opener to the Chicago Cubs 5-2 at Minute Maid Park. Houston took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning when New Braunfels native Lance Berkman hit an RBI single, driving in Michael Bourne. The Cubs responded by scoring a pair of runs in both the 2nd and 3rd innings, and never trailed the Astros again. Wesley Wright took the loss for Houston, giving up eight hits and four runs in five innings on the mound.

Texas State's Hall & Griggs Each Named To Another All-American Team - July 27, 2010

More Pre-season All-American honors are in for a pair of Texas State football players. Junior offensive lineman DJ Hall and senior wide receiver Da’Marcus Griggs were named as pre-season All-Americans by the Sports Network yesterday, Hall to the 1st team and Griggs the 3rd. Both players were tabbed as All-Americans earlier this month by magazine publications Phil Steele and Lindy’s. The Southland Conference had a total of seven players listed as pre-season All-Americans by the Sports Network.
