Resignations Prevail Ahead of Likely Cuts to Teachers in the NBISD
(New Braunfels, TX) -- The New Braunfels ISD School Board still has a tough decision ahead of them when they meet tonight, but the numbers aren’t quite as drastic as originally thought. When the school board meets tonight, they will consider terminating the contracts of probationary teachers in the district. There are 127 of those teachers currently on staff in the NBISD, but district officials tell KGNB that in the last few days, many of those teachers have decided to resign at the end of this school year, and now there are only 35 of those teachers that face termination at tonight’s meeting. And many of those teachers are choosing termination in order to possibly collect unemployment benefits.
Of course, their termination is through no fault of their own, and is, instead, the net result of cuts to education funding at the state level, forcing districts across Texas to find ways to save money. And all 127 of those teachers will have a chance to get their jobs back. About 90 of those teaching positions will come back open before the next school year begins, but teachers will have to start from scratch and go through the entire interview process before being rehired.
Meanwhile, NBISD administrators continue to look for ways to save money, as they face an estimated 7½ to 8-million dollar budget shortfall. About 2-million dollars of cuts to operational costs have already been identified. And the school board has already decided to use about 3½-million dollars from the district’s reserve fund to help bridge the gap. But since the majority of operating costs in the district come from teacher salaries, the school board is still poised to take action tonight on ending those 35 probationary teacher contracts. That meeting is tonight at 6 at the NBISD Education Center on West Mill Street.
