Red Turf Installation at Canyon's Cougar Stadium Nearly Complete
(New Braunfels, TX) -- Canyon Cougar football and soccer fans will be seeing red this year, quite literally, thanks to the new red turf being installed on the football field at Canyon High School's Cougar Stadium. Comal ISD Superintendent Dr. Marc Walker says Canyon has the distinction of being the first and only high school in the country with a red football field. The installation of that new turf is scheduled for completion on Jan. 10th. The red field features white hash marks, black end zones, and the Canyon High School logo in black, white and red on the fifty yard line. That installation is expected to be finished in time for Canyon to host the 3-day Comal Cup soccer tournament which begins on the 13th of this month. Both Canyon Lake and Smithson Valley High Schools have also had new turf installed this year, but those schools elected to stay with the traditional green turf. I read the grant money could not be spent on anything other than improving the turf. Don't know how true that actually is. However, I do not agree with the improvement of the grounds while leaving the students without adequate teaching.
And the other concern: The band uniforms are red, and there is no money to get new ones. So, is the band theme this year going to be camoflauge?????

CISD seems to have a problem keeping kids in school... but have no problems drawing a crowd to their sporting events. Even the kids see this as extravagant and how sports rule CISD, not quality teaching. China and Japan will keep turning out students who will continue to excel as CISD students wallow in the greed of the CISD administration.

I like It! My daughter goes there. My son graduated from there. Who cares if followed in the steps of Boise State. I like it and when my daughter graduates this year I will return in the fall to cheers on our beloved Coogs. We will be better! Alot of promise from last year. Go COOGS!

Our school spent nearly $20,000/year to maintain our grass football field for football games, practices, soccer games and practices, and marching band. Sod, seed, time, field paint, etc. were incredibly costly on many levels.
Today our artificial field, which cost about $200,000 and will be paid off in a couple of years, attracts business, gate income at games, neutral field games, local championship hosting duties, etc. because it's the finest field in the area. On top of that, it's a great source of school and community pride.
Switching to a turf field is absolutely the right thing to do, and in short time, virtually every high school will have them.

According to CISD officials, the turf at CHS cost apprx. $400,000.00 and the one at SVHS cost $400,000.00 also. Check out the websites that promote these artificial turfs and you'll see that there are maintenance costs associated with artificial turfs as well, apprx 2 to 3 times less that that of a conventional grass field. So every 8 or 9 years $800,000.00 will be spent on replacement turfs, just as these turfs now are replacements from the original trufs apprx. 9 years ago.
Not a waste
It has been proven that installing turf actually saves money. You remove the all maintenance costs associated with a grass field and in the long haul there will be more money for other programs!
And not that I care ..... but it is better for the environment; made of recycled materials; uses no water or fertilizers etc...
If you want a red field, even though I say it looks horrible, have at it!

Given any time period, this is a waste of valuable resources. Extravogant and careless. We need to teach our children restraint and responsibility as well as due diligence. There are plenty of other students and programs that would have benifited.

What are you stupid? I live in Atlanta and pretty much all the old football fields are going to turf and all the new schools have it. Look at it this way, over time it will save money, and you know what that means? All that saved money will go to other things the school needs instead of paying to water, weed, grass seed and everything else a yard needs. Be smart!
